    From Hebrew Press

Yediot Ahronot recommends that those who decided upon the ground operation take into account the following: "A. There is not, there never was and there never will be a war that ends all wars.  A week, month or a year after we decisively beat Hamas, it will return to its starting point.  B. Our enemy, in this case Hamas, has endless human resources and an arsenal that is almost impossible to deplete.  C. After every war – and this is a fact! – The enemy rearms with much newer weapons than it previously had, learns well the mistakes of the previous war, and tries – and also succeeds – to improve."

Ma'ariv notes that, "This morning Israel will awake to an atmosphere of war.  War has a price.  When a war is just, one must know to pay that price.  There is no war more just than Israel's war against Hamas…We are returning to Gaza.  Not in order to stay there.  We are returning to Gaza in order to stay alive.  Just as Nasrallah did not believe that Israel would not react as it did in July 2006, so this time Hamas did not believe that Israel would make a move like this on the eve of elections.  And so we did."

Yisrael Hayom argues that, "In the past days many reasons have been given for and against the ground attack.  But it would seem that the reason that made the decision was taken from the areas of symbolism and psychology: Israel's avoidance of a ground confrontation would have been perceived – by them and by us – as a Hamas victory, which we cannot afford to allow ourselves."

Gaza and International Law

Eli E. Hertz

What unites Palestinian Arabs is their opposition to Jewish nationalism and a desire to stamp it out - not aspirations for their own state. Murdering Jews is a collective Palestinian Arab effort that requires a collectively sensible response

Punishing Gaza in Vain   Rami G. Khouri

History shows Israel’s insistence on military overkill (literally) will only cause the Palestinians to come back stronger and with more political will. Its insistence on Middle East military dominance results in fewer friends and more enemies

Japan’s Ambassador to Israel

By Neil Sandler

This reporter had the pleasure of  interviewing  Japan’s Ambassador to Israel Yoshinori Katori at his magnificent villa in Herzliya Pituach recently.  The Ambassador’s tenure in Israel finishes at the end of September 2008.  He has been Ambassador to Israel for 2 years, since the summer of 2006.

    Economy

**Despite the global financial crisis, 2008 was the best year ever for the tourism industry in Israel, with a record-breaking number of incoming tourists. Three million visitors entered the country this year, representing a 30% growth compared to last year's figures and a 13% growth compared to the year 2000, which held the record until now. Some 11 million passengers went through Ben-Gurion Airport this year, a 10% increase compared to 2007. Statistics also revealed that some 25% of tourists this year were Jewish, 66% Christians and the rest either members of other religions or of no religious affiliation (“2008: Record year for tourism,” Ynetnews.com, 3 Dec 2008).

**An Italian Institute for Foreign Trade and Italian industrial union convention was held in November in Tel Aviv, with the goal of strengthening commercial and industrial relations with Israel.
